The Happy Prince
Once upon a time, there was a prince who had everything in life. He had not seen any sorrow in his life and helped his people whenever he could.
A while later, the prince died. People were so sad that they arected a statue in his memory. The statue was made of lead and various jewels. Blue jewels were fixed in his eyes. The statue was kept over a pillar at the center of the town so that everybody could remember him.
One day, a swallow came to visit the place and stopped between the feet of the statue. During the night when the swallow was going to sleep, it felt a drop on its head. It looked up and saw tears coming out from the eyes of the statue. He was very sad.
The swallow was surprised and asked about what it could do. The prince told it that he had seen that there was house in the distance where a poor woman lived. She was very sad because she had no money to buy food and medicines for her son who was very sick.
The prince requested for the swallow to help the woman. He gave one of the jewels on his sword to the swallow and told it to hand it over to the poor old woman. She became happy after receiving the jewel as she could buy medicines and good food for her son.
The swallow whised to fly to the warm place where its family members had gone. It said goodbye to the prince but he stopped the swallow. He whised for more work to be done by the swallow. He took off his jewels from his body and all the pieces of his cloth. He whised to help a poor young man who wanted to write good things but was unable to do so, due to lack of money. Not only that. He also helped other people who where unhappy. The prince never whised to see anyone unhappy in the world.
Then the day came when all the jewlels of his body were gone. The prince looked ugly and shabby. The swallow never left the place to help the prince. Then the snow came. The little swallow got colder and colder, it knew that its end had come.
“Goodbye.” Replied the prince. Something broke inside him. It was his heart.
One day, the mayor and councilors saw the bad condition of the statue of the prince during their visit. A dead bird was under his feet. They decided to remove the statue from that place and replace the statue with one of the mayor. The workmen found that there was a heart inside the statue which did not melt. They decided to throw the heart into the heap of the dust where the little dead swallow was lying.
God was seeing this and ordered his angles to bring the two most precious things from the town. They brought the broken heart and the dead swallow. It is said that the little bird and happy prince still lived in paradise.
